ripe for parody

A tidbit from the program notes of last night's (mostly excellent) CSO double-bill of Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich:

"[Gerald] McBurney recently finished orchestrating Shostakovich's lost opera about a monkey-human hybrid, Orango, which will be premiered in Los Angeles in 2011-12."

I hope they give Orango as warm a welcome as they gave Dudamel ("Bienvenido Orango?")

Apparently animal-human hybrid operas (in German, Tiermenschverwandlungsopern) are all the rage in L.A. after Howard Shore's 2008 smash-hit The Fly.
